On Sundays I was always required to go to Sunday school and church to give me the right understandings about my purpose in life.   Even though we were poor Mom and Dad were dedicated to the giving us everything we needed to grow up healthy and happy and have the right values in life. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;They explained what they thought we needed to understand and they would explain anything to us that we had questions about.  But I missed out on something. I didn’t know what I didn’t know so I didn’t ask.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I heard and felt the fact that we were poor. Dad explained that he was able to borrow money from a rich guy in town because of his integrity in paying his debts and he taught me that lesson over and over. I heard Dad tell about being bullied when he was a small boy with polio. I heard him tell of having to fight and it was very scary. He told of the very mean football coach forcing him to tackle the big guys and getting hurt over and over. So I learned that many people are out to hurt you and they will. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I heard and saw Mom being so uncomfortable around people and always being a ‘worry wart about not having enough money to pay the bills.  I saw her carrying a very heavy burden working long hours and devoting herself to raising her three kids yet never thinking of or demanding anything for herself. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I saw them both doing the best they could with their situation in life.  Those are the kinds of things that stuck with me.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I never wanted to confront anyone about anything because I was so unsure of myself that in any conflict I immediately felt that I had been stupid and wrong. I felt afraid and embarrassed a lot even though others seldom knew it. On the surface I was a normal, popular young guy that was shy with girls, and a little, no maybe a LOT, stupid.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I now see that I was self-conscious and afraid because I lacked the proper understandings, what I now call my Purpose in Life.  I always felt like I couldn’t be free to be and do and say as I wanted or I would just be embarrassed and humiliated again . It was like being trapped in some unknown way, like being a rat in a maze, no matter which way I turned it always seemed I was wrong.  I am sure that my pain and needs as a young boy are the source of the strong motivation that I have to help others.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Today I am so happy to have found and understood these things that seem like THE answer!! Of course it doesn’t hurt that today I am retired and free of the pressures of a JOB!! &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But by writing about the Universal Purpose in Life and the implications of it I can make sure that ‘this boat holds water’, that this message doesn't 'have a hole in it' and that others can also see it.  And then I can tell everyone about it! &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It would be wonderful to be able to help others to avoid a lot of the pain and insecurity that I had and the loss of potential that results from insecurities!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It seems to me that this understanding of the Universal Purpose in Life is what I needed.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If I had understood that everyone had many of the same insecurities that I had then I wouldn’t have felt that everyone else was OK and understood more than me. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If I had understood that we all have potentials for really good contributions to our family and others but we have to find them, then I would have been looking for mine instead of worrying about what others thought about me and how they might hurt me. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If I had understood that I had the potential to do some really great things in this world and I had the responsibility to find them and do them, then I would have taken that responsibility very seriously. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If I had understood that my family had confidence that I would find my best potentials and that they would be really proud of me when I discovered them I believe I would have been aggressively looking to fulfill that potential as soon as possible. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It would have cleared a lot of the other things out of my mind and allowed me to be more focused, productive and self-confident.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I am confident that having the right understanding and the right motives has helped me to be more focused on doing things instead of worrying so much about what others think and say and do.  That is improved productivity coming from improved self-confidence.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;As a result of my mind being free of all the thoughts about what others are thinking and what I did or didn’t do in the past, I am much happier.  And I am confident that adopting this way of thinking can do the same for others.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I hope so much that this understanding resonates with you and that it can be passed on to your children and theirs and help you and them to be more self-confident, focused, productive and happy people.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;/////////////////////////////////////////////////&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It just keeps happening that everywhere I go I am meeting people easily and many of them are happy and even eager to establish a relationship with me.  I am surprised and amazed and I Love it!!  Of course, when people see an older guy by himself out enjoying the world they naturally think he is single and rich.  Of course I naturally think that my sparkling personality is finally showing through!!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I really like to talk to people and I haven’t had enough of that in my lifestyle for a long time. So I am like a hungry man with a plate of excellent (French, of course) food in front of me and it makes me feel like I am living 'The Good Life'!!   So I naturally want to overeat!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In addition to being very enjoyable to meet new people and get to talk with them, it seems like such a fortunate thing that I am building a base of friends who might be interested in my book and my ideas! Hey it’s really about being ‘in service to’ you, NOT trying to sell a lot of books!!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;One of the things I am writing about is defining what ‘The Best Things in Life’ and ‘Living the Good Life’ means to me and helping people to define what those things mean to them.  It’s a good thing to start with the right direction and the end result in mind when you take off on a journey.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I am extra happy because I have a loving family and loving sisters and their families and I have a mission to write this book. The mission gives me motivation and excitement and energy and enthusiasm and it seems to be generating excitement and pride in my family members as well!  I know that I am writing this book to bring forth my potential and to be in service to my family and the world.  And that is part of the reason I have such a wonderful family. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Now I find that the principles of this UNIVERSAL PURPOSE IN LIFE have been around for a long time.  Over 2500 years ago Buddha said the following:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;“Your work is to find your work and devote yourself completely to it” – Buddha&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The UNIVERSAL PURPOSE IN LIFE says ‘We all have unique potentials within us.  It is our responsibility to find those potentials and devote ourselves to bringing them forth to the best of our ability in service to others.’  Sounds like the same thing doesn’t it?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Mother Theresa said many wonderful things that illustrated so well her incredible love and her devotion and her message to the world and so much of it resonates with me. But there are some things that I love the most and relate most to my life and my mission right now:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;a href="http://www.mothertheresasayings.com/" target="_blank"&gt;http://www.mothertheresasayings.com/&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Many people, including me, have never understood why Mother Theresa is so famous.  You will see the core of her beliefs in the quotes below.  Go to the above website and read about her and her life's work and then you will get a glimpse of her true love and devotion and why this woman has been and is so revered.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;“God doesn’t require us to succeed; he only requires that you try.”  – Mother Theresa&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;That is the first part of the central theme of the UNIVERSAL PURPOSE IN LIFE!  It is your responsibility to bring forth the best potential that you have at the moment.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;“Give the world the best you have, and it may never be enough;&lt;br /&gt;Give the world the best you've got anyway” – Mother Theresa&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This is the second part of the UNIVERSAL PURPOSE IN LIFE.  It is your responsibility to do your utmost to bring forth your best potential.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt; “There should be less talk; a preaching point is not a meeting point. What do you do then?&lt;br /&gt;Take a broom and clean someone's house. That says enough.”  – Mother Theresa&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;When you are in service to others your actions say enough. You don’t need a lot of talk to convey your intentions.  It is my responsibility to present my understandings in the best way I possibly can to assist others.  If I don’t say it well enough it won’t be understood so I must devote myself to doing my absolute best. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt; “People are often unreasonable, illogical, and self-centered;&lt;br /&gt;Forgive them anyway.”  – Mother Theresa&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;To be able to accept people as they are and as they do and be confident with yourself was a tough lesson for me to learn.  I am a really slow learner!!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;“If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives;&lt;br /&gt;Be kind anyway.” – Mother Theresa&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;To not be shaken by the accusations of others because you know your motives are pure gives great peace of mind and satisfaction. Now I know for sure what my motives are, to be in service to my Teams. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;“If you are successful you will win some false friends and true enemies;&lt;br /&gt;Succeed anyway.” – Mother Theresa&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;There always seemed to be the story in our house that successful people were somehow dishonest or inconsiderate of others is why they were successful.  So success was really seen as a bad thing.  This understanding of the UNIVERSAL PURPOSE IN LIFE lets you accept success and the reactions of others because it is part of your purpose and potential.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;“If you are honest and frank, people may cheat you;&lt;br /&gt;Be honest and frank anyway.” – Mother Theresa&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It takes internal strength to be honest and frank especially when you have made a mistake or want something very badly.  But that strength which comes from the proper motivation will bring real success which is satisfaction and peace of mind. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;To devote yourself to bringing forth your best in service to others gives the direction.  You must be honest and frank to be devoted to your PURPOSE IN LIFE.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;“What you spend years building, someone could destroy overnight;&lt;br /&gt;Build anyway.” – Mother Theresa&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;When you are devoted to THE UNIVERSAL PURPOSE IN LIFE you will go on loving others and being productive and focused even though you know you might be hurt.  You’ll never make the basket that you didn’t shoot.  Keep going for your potential ‘until the very end’ as Abraham Lincoln said.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;“If you find serenity and happiness, they may be jealous;&lt;br /&gt;Be happy anyway.” – Mother Theresa&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;What other people think or say or do does not change your Purpose in Life. ‘Keep on Keepin’ on’!! &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;“The good you do today, people will often forget tomorrow;&lt;br /&gt;Do good anyway.” – Mother Theresa&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;True, your good deeds and intentions will not always result in praise and thankfulness from others.  But the Universal Purpose in Life gives you different motives.  Your intention is to achieve 'success' for yourself, i.e., gain self satisfaction and peace of mind from knowing that you did your absolute best.  Then your mission is clear, ‘Just Do It!!.’&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;“…the fruit of love is service, and the fruit of service is peace.” – Mother Theresa&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Being ‘in service to’ is demonstrating love, the verb.  And the knowledge that you have been in service to and done your best brings you peace of mind.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;“If we want a love message to be heard, it has got to be sent out.” – Mother Theresa&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Part of the UNIVERSAL PURPOSE IN LIFE is to ‘Bring Forth’ your potential and to do that you must share your ideas with others in a way that it can be heard.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;“I have come more and more to realize that it is being unwanted that is the worst disease that any human being can ever experience.” – Mother Theresa&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;To be in service to others demonstrates that they are wanted.  To be in service to others means that you are wanted because you have a PURPOSE IN LIFE that is serving mankind.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;“Never bother about other people's opinions. Be humble and you will never be disturbed.” – Mother Theresa&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;When you are in service to others you are not seeking something for yourself therefore you are humble.  Other people’s opinions don’t change your intentions nor your PURPOSE IN LIFE.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;“You see, in the final analysis, it is between you and God; it was never between you and them anyway.” – Mother Theresa&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Now I see. And it will continue to become more valuable as the shortage of supply is made worse by our ever increasing population on this earth.  A shortage of good fresh water is even more a cause for wars than a shortage of oil!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;There is a wonderful new invention I just saw on TV that I want to share with all of you!  The way to use cold sea water and warm air to create fresh water with very little energy!!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Obviously places in the Middle East where so much of the world's energy comes from and so much of the world’s wealth is accumulating, need this dramatically.  So I expect the first production plant to be built soon.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But like many new ideas, as soon as they are exposed to the public, dramatic improvements start flowing in.  Think of the few short years ago really that the Wright Brothers invented the airplane and now we send men to the moon etc. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So hopefully one or more of you will come up with the BIG NEW IMPROVEMENT that will change the world and bring forth your best Potential for Mankind!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We all know about setting a glass of ice water on the table and soon a ring of water is all around it.  So what causes that?  It is the difference in the temperature of the glass and the surrounding air.  When the warm air with moisture in it comes in contact with the colder object the moisture vapor immediately is attracted to the object and clings to it.  Then as the amount of moisture exceeds the kinetic energy that holds it on the glass it begins to run down the glass to the table top.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The same phenomenon is observed in Hot Houses where they grow plants indoors.  The moisture accumulates on the walls and in large places it actually causes rain to fall inside the building!!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So what they have done is to prove the concept that if you are by the ocean, you can pump cold sea water from the depths up through pipes and then spray it onto a huge grid (that is the temperature of outside) and as the wind blows through the grid (or as they blow air through it) the moisture in the air and on the grid is converted to a mist and when it comes to the cold tubes it accumulates and drips down to collection areas at the bottom!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The energy requirements for this process are dramatically lower than the old desalinization plants!! &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Now we all know that this same process works in our living rooms.  So we don't have to be by the ocean!  In fact I remember seeing a technique where people are able to get water out of the air in the desert by making a little roof that gets hot by the sun on the top and is cooler on the bottom side because of the shade.  It was demonstrated in "The Flight of the Phoenix" movie.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So how can we figure out a way to replenish the world with a never ending supply of the most precious commodity on earth? &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;NEW!!!   How can we cheaply produce an unlimited supply of fresh water for our communities without having to drill wells and pump it up to water towers?  Of course, create water in the water towers!! &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Those little refrigerators that work will a small amount of current to circulate the right kind of gas (Freon?).  Use the same concept at the top of the towers and cool a grid.  Of course we could use the heavy duty ones like big refrigeration units but the small ones might be sufficient and more economical.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Have it turn like a windmill to face the wind at the perfect direction.  The picture they showed was of a big stadium with a honeycomb grid at the back.  Have our grid be a honeycomb for maximum cold surface exposed to the air. What a name, right? A Prairie…a village in a prairie. The image one gets from the name is not so good. But the reality is much better. There are big oaks along the streets. The little and old houses are WAY too inexpensive for this beautiful area and location in one of the finest cities in the world!! One day Nanette and I might buy one, tear it down and build her dream home right there. It would start a trend and all the housing values would soar! We need to buy several of them before we build. The value of the others would pay for the new one!!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I was only able to get a reservation for 6:15 pm which was a little early for me. But I knew I wanted to go and I was looking forward to a nice glass of wine and a Kir Royale, my favorite French drink consisting of Champagne with Crème de Cassis. It’s delicious!! You’ve got to try it!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I think as I drove to the restaurant that the name ‘The Audacity of Hope’ seems to fit my book and my project proposal perfectly. I’ll bet Barrack Obama would love this idea! Does anyone know how we could submit it to him and see what he thinks? It would be a win-win!! ‘The Audacity of a Universal Purpose in Life!!’ That’s a winner!! I’m going to use it!!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It is early summer so the day is still full of light and I am one of the first people at the restaurant. Some people are sitting out at little tables with white tablecloths on the sidewalk in front of the place. It is comfortable, the temperature is perfect; people are leisurely drinking a nice glass of wine or reading a book or having a pleasant conversation.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I was ready to say I wanted to eat out there, but when I walked in and the soft music was echoing in the background and gruff little Danielle with her strong French Accent came to assist me to my table I knew I belonged inside.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A new young waiter asked me if the seat that Danielle had chosen for me was OK. I had to stop and think because it wasn’t. I wasn’t for sure why it wasn’t but I could tell it wasn’t the best seat in the place. I carefully evaluated them all and decided upon a small table at the front window. That one was reserved but ‘Jacques’ chose another very close that actually turned out to be even much better!! Danielle reported in her stern little voice with that haughty little attitude that since I had chosen that seat, JoAnn would be my waitress. She pronounced ‘JoAnn’ in such a way that I couldn’t tell for sure the name and I had to ask when my waitress arrived.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I sat and relaxed. I had just showered and had on my best new shirt and pants and felt really good. I was comfortable that I looked good because my new friend ‘Dr.’ Chen, at Dillard’s had assisted me to choose them. ‘Dr.’ Chen had given me his ‘Ph.D.’ explanation of all the collar styles and colors that look best on my complexion and what to wear whenever I am in different types of company, etc. He has an extremely heavy oriental accent but he is without doubt a ‘Ph.D.’ in clothes! Doctor of Philosophy, abbreviated Ph.D. for the &lt;a title="Latin" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Latin"&gt;Latin&lt;/a&gt; Philosophiæ Doctor, meaning "teacher of philosophy," I just recently found him and I am so happy to have someone like him assisting me and on my Team!! I’ve needed Dr. Chen all my life!!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I looked around. The place was less than half full, the soft, beautiful music was rather ‘wispy’ like I would suspect would be in a restaurant in the really ‘French’ part of Paris or another nice city in France. The young waiter and JoAnn and Danielle all display the service and manners befitting the elegance of the French names in the menu and the quiet elegance of the small French restaurant.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The young woman preparing drinks behind the bar had a very attractive face, ie., she was rather like ‘Eye Candy’ and that added to the pleasure of my table and my view. The couple at the next table, I later found out, are in town to go to the opera. They come up from a KS city eight times per year since they have tickets for half of the season. They love the Opera. They commented about the pleasure of a nice French restaurant and I agreed and we drank a toast to that and had a pleasant little discourse. I have noticed and I love it, that when I feel like this, when I am so happy and so content within myself, that I do attract a lot of people who just enjoy talking. And so do I!!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;JoAnn described the appetizer special of the day; 3 small pieces of toast each topped with a different piece of smoked seafood, one with a shrimp, one with sliced salmon and the other with a scallop. Each one is 'sitting on a small bed of saffron potatoes and drizzled with' a sauce of something I didn’t catch. I had to try that!! I ordered a glass of a wine that I had not tried before, Louis Latour Valmoissine Pinot Noir.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I sat back and listened to the music, I noticed the rather inexpensive looking pictures high on the wall on the East side of the restaurant. They were of young French women in very fashionable dresses in those ‘model’ poses with the attitudes of the ‘upper crust’. But this time I saw them in a different light than I had before. This time I saw that this part of life is not about sexuality or make believe, it is about the pleasure of elegance!! There is nothing really expensive in this place!! It is simply an attitude and an appreciation of a different and wonderful side of life that I had sensed and liked before but never really understood!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The sounds begin to meld together as the crowd grows in size and the music seems to change to a more mixed up sound that matches perfectly with the sounds from the crowd. Craig and Joyce French (we commented on the interesting name) and I introduce ourselves and discuss our jobs. Craig was injured a few years ago and had to retire. He is now an Author of Neo something type literature and has an agent in Sweden that is preparing to publish his first book!! I am an Author out celebrating the proposal that I am about to submit to the American Express Members Projects challenge. Craig and Joyce can’t wait to see it! I give them my new card – Jerry W. Willis – Author – member Bay Head Speakers Guild – &lt;a href="http://www.jerrywwillis.com"&gt;www.jerrywwillis.com&lt;/a&gt; . We exchange email addresses. He will send me some of his writing and I will send him my proposal – I Have a Dream! But I Need Your Help! Now maybe that should be ‘I Have a Dream – The Audacity of a Universal Purpose in Life!’&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;JoAnn wants to know if I am ready to order my main course because I am so slowly eating my appetizer. But no, I am savoring this like never before. I am testing and tasting my wine and my appetizer – I swirl the wine in the large glass and smell it before almost each taste – as if I had a sense of smell and could really appreciate the exciting variety of smells that swirling the wine brings out, 'the hints of fruits like apple and pear', etc! So much fun in even the description!!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It feels like the wine tastes better because I smell it before I take a drink! Yes, there is more to even taking a small taste of wine than most people, like me, ever learned early in life!!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I finish the appetizer and the wine. It is good but I have tasted better. But it isn’t about the taste, not this time, it is about the event, the situation, the everything!! I order my favorite, a Kir Royale - Champagne with Crème de Cassis (a black currant flavored liqueur). They are delicious!!  You can get the much cheaper black currant Flavored product and the Kir Royale tastes just fine. But the really good stuff is the Black Currant Liqueur in the bottle that looks like it was made for Royalty!! Thank you Pam (the love in my Son and Grandson’s lives – and now mine!) who introduced me to this 'higher level'!!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The Kir Royale comes with a small piece of lemon rind obviously twisted ever so slightly just to get the last little bit of lemon juice from the very little fruit left on the rim of the rind. Those French…they know how to find and use the most delicate bits of flavor in so many of their drinks and dishes!!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;At the table in front of me is a nice, rich Grandmother and Grandfather entertaining their Granddaughter who is enjoying the interest from and the ‘quaintness’ of her Grandparents, her 'Ancestors'!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In the background through the open door to the kitchen the flames are jumping and creating a warm glow in the light. Before the chef covers them to prepare the next dish, he gently removes small portions of the current menu item from his skillet and places them ever so carefully in such a way as to have a ‘creation’ on the dish. For that is part of the beauty of the elegance, the pleasure for him and for all of his ‘Guests’ – those that understand and appreciate what this is all about. Funny, I never saw it all before. I never understood it so well before. It really is a thing of beauty and pleasure!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Danielle, with her normal diligence, is busily clearing the table after one set of customers leave, apparently oblivious, although I doubt it, to the beauty that she and the environment are creating. JoAnn announces to me that my dinner of Sea Bass with saffron sauce, with a curry sauce and a bueurre blanc (white butter sauce), should be ready in just minutes. She calls me ‘Monsieur’ and I call her ‘Madame’ and say ‘Merci’ and try to remember some of the French words I learned last year. Not to impress her but to feel good about myself that I do know some of this beautiful ‘Language of Love’. I must remember to look up some of the words before I come next time!! It is so nice to know and use them! It adds to the pleasure.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The ‘Eye Candy’ Barmaid smiles as she interacts with the male waiter and learns how to enter the items in the computer which is neatly hidden behind a column. She must be new. The Kir Royale and the wine have brightened and lightened my view of the world and what I am experiencing. The world is beautiful!! Life is GOOD!!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I want more to drink but I know that I am at the ‘top of the mountain’ and it is now time to begin coming down the other side. My entrée arrives. It has ‘baby carrots’ in the white cream sauce, the buerre blanc, surrounded by the light green saffron sauce. The large chunk of Sea Bass sits atop a 'finger of' deep fat fried 'potato jutting out into the mustard sauce'. There are no salt and pepper shakers on the tables – things are presented the way they ‘should be’, the way the chef has carefully prepared them!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;As the Granddaughter discusses her ‘extreme engineering’ project in China she says it is ‘very cool’. The Sea Bass flakes perfectly into huge chips, the sauces are mild and tantalizing. They could use just a little more salt but…&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The male waiter explains to a new guest about the special of Sea Bass with ‘baby carrots’ in saffron sauce. Granddaughter is happily telling about the new Music Festival that she is planning to attend soon.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I’m getting full even before I finish these relatively small portions. But I want to be sure to save room for the wonderful desserts and a ‘French Press’ of café.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;You can tell some guests are parents entertaining their children and their spouses. The parents are tan and smiling; happy, obviously comfortable, dressed in very nice looking clothes. The Father in the couple closest to me has on a yellow and black striped knit shirt and the obligatory mustache of the rich and suave. The Mother reminds me of Jane Fonda with large rimmed glasses.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A delightful new couple comes in looking beautiful and they kiss and hug their waiting children before they sit down. This man has on a rather silk looking shirt that looks great!! I’m going to have to get one of those! He has on nice loafers. But the thing that makes each of these parents look so good is that they are trim!! I’ve got to get my eating under control!!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;‘Eye Candy’ has perfect teeth. She is a little overweight and not dressed extremely well I see as she comes out from behind the bar. Danielle is describing the ‘Ta Ta Ta’ and the Crepe Suzette and the Chocolate Cake called ‘Gateau Au Chocolat‘ to a couple near me. I can’t wait, but I want to. The anticipation makes it even more fun and good!!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A young couple next to me seems to be trying to decide what to order but when they do the lady comfortably orders ‘the Ceasar Salad and hold the anchovies’ and the ‘Croque Chez Jacques’. She obviously knows a little French and enjoys it too. People are clicking wine glasses in toasts, smiling and smelling the wines before they taste. There is definitely the feel of being in France where the pleasures of good food and wines and service are treasured and exalted!!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Grandmother’s silk blouse is hung up on the back of her chair but she doesn’t know it and granddaughter doesn’t do anything about it if she sees it.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I order a crepe suzette and a French Press Café. Delicious!! Why haven’t I been ordering these more often? –&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;"Crêpe Suzette is a typical &lt;a title="France" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/France"&gt;French&lt;/a&gt; and &lt;a title="Belgium" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Belgium"&gt;Belgian&lt;/a&gt; dessert, consisting of a &lt;a title="Crêpe" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cr%C3%AApe"&gt;crêpe&lt;/a&gt; with a hot sauce of caramelised sugar, orange juice, lightly grated &lt;a title="Orange (fruit)" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orange_%28fruit%29"&gt;orange&lt;/a&gt; peel and &lt;a title="Liqueur" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liqueur"&gt;liqueur&lt;/a&gt; (usually &lt;a title="Grand Marnier" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grand_Marnier"&gt;Grand Marnier&lt;/a&gt;) on top, which is subsequently lit."&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Grandmother’s hair is obviously coiffed – she is sweet and elegant and full of hope and pleasure and pride in her granddaughter. They talk of a ‘multi-year project’ which has a new meaning to me now that I have attained this golden age and Grandmother is obviously quite a bit older. It is almost humorous. Reminds me of the woman saying she doesn’t even buy green bananas anymore.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;JoAnn smiles always. She greatly enjoys her guests loving their food and the experience and she knows and can see that I do. She wears large circle earrings; I always like large earrings on a woman. Her hair is cut very short in the back which I normally don’t like. But it doesn’t matter. Her sparkling personality, and obvious love of life, overcomes any deficits in her real physical beauty. She has a small heart discreetly tattooed on the back of her left hand.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This is why we want our family members to get a good education. So they can earn enough money to experience some of these extremely nice moments in life. But, many of them are available even if you don’t have a lot of money. All it takes is effort and setting the right priorities and having a glimpse of what is out there when you have the right understandings!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Granddad is comfortably taking his time looking over the menu while the young waiter waits patiently and comfortably. When he finally decides and orders Grandmother gently makes fun of him and to Granddaughter. They smile at each other with the comfortable attitude that says they have great Love for each other and enjoy each other so much especially in these times.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;That is a wonderful feeling!! Nanette and I have it a lot! That is a beautiful part of a relationship that grows and mellows and ages gracefully when you are with the right kind of person in your life.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Grandmother and Granddaughter share some unique family features; the nose, the chin, the smile, the deep set eyes. They laugh and smile with obvious pleasure and happiness with the relationship and the evening.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Excellent!! It’s time to leave. JoAnn and I hug. We shared something beautiful together; my enjoyment of the evening, the food, the atmosphere and her service; and the common understanding! These things may seem superficial but they are not for some of us. This is a new and a better level, one that you want to experience if you can.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;As I leave it is still light even though it is almost 9 pm. The temperature is perfect. The sky is clear. The air is clean. The neighborhoods are quiet and peaceful. WOW!!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;There are some things in life that you want, like being really ‘Happy’, and sometimes you can’t imagine what it truly is going to feel like when they happen. This is a different realm in an alternate reality. It’s like ‘Number One’ experienced in the ‘Holideck ‘ on my favorite Star Trek show.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I don't know if any of you have experienced what I am experiencing right now but I hope you have and do. The thrill, excitement, hope, joy, satisfaction and peace of mind of all that you could hope for, even better than your dreams, and then some more, all happening in one fell swoop!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Wow! That’s all I can say, is WOW!!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So now I have typed past midnight. The first celebration of June 9, 2007 is now over. It was wonderful! I am an observer, a writer, a speaker, a good Team member with the understanding and vision of a program that I know can make a huge difference.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I have excitedly described how this program would work to my sister and other Teams of mine and they have helped me to develop it even further. But when I tried to figure out how to get the funding to start it, I ‘folded like a cheap suit’!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Then a Team member of mine brought the American Express Members Projects to my attention. There it is!! That’s the way!! People with money searching for a way to bring forth their Potential and the Potential of their members to make our country and our world a better place!! Incredible things can and do happen!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I know within reason that there are tens of thousands of young people in this country and in the world who are not able to focus and bring forth their best because they don’t have an organized and clear way to think and understand and make good decisions.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I know that our public education system in this country leaves a lot of people out and leaves a lot of them behind and that we, as a country, are confused about what to do about it.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I know that that confusion leads to a lot of contention within various elements of our society. And I know that we, as a people, are willing to pay, are willing to devote a lot more or our resources to solve this problem if we can just figure out a way; a way to focus our money and effort and attention on a program that will really work.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I have a dream! Yes, I have a Dream!! I have a dream about a way to change that and turn it around. I have a dream of a day when all of our young people will come out of our public education system with the same Universal Purpose in Life. One that causes them to be constantly searching for a bigger and better way to devote themselves to bringing forth their best potential in service to others. And yet to be fully focused and completely dedicated to bringing forth the best potential they have discovered so far in service to their families and work and other teams in their lives.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And because of this Universal Purpose in Life, because of the fact that they know that they have put forth their utmost effort in bringing forth their best potential, they are self-confident, satisfied and have peace of mind! That because they are constantly searching for better ways to bring forth their Highest and Best Potential, they are excited and looking forward to tomorrow, knowing that ‘the best is yet to come!’&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I have a dream that they come out of our public education system understanding what ‘the best things in life’ really are; that they understand what ‘living the good life’ really is, and that they are realizing those things in their lives because it is they are the result of being devoted to and living The Universal Purpose in Life.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Yes, I have a dream. A dream that this can and will come true! And that dream has brought me here to American Express and to You. Willis&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;PROJECT NAME:  Education for ‘Teams’ of Families?  Principles of Success? &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;PROJECT TYPE:  Education&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;SUMMARY:  Fund a program to teach the principles that John Wooden used to build excellent and successful basketball teams to build excellent and successful families!    See &lt;a href="http://www.jerrywwillis.com/" target="_blank"&gt;www.jerrywwillis.com&lt;/a&gt;. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;My new book has a working title of  ‘Coaching the Rest of Us – Applying John Wooden’s principles in Your Life’. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Here is how the program will work. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The key Principle and Concept is a new understanding of ‘success’:&lt;br /&gt;“...we are all given a certain potential unique to each one of us. Our first responsibility is to make the utmost effort to bring forth that potential in service to our team. For me, that is success." - John Wooden&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It’s a camp.  It’s a camp teaching the principles of Success.  It’s Summer Camp and Coaching program teaching students to bring forth their best in service to their Team.  We use John Wooden’s principles.  He is the best coach of all times. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Here is an extract of key parts of a recent teleconference about the program:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;JERRY W. Willis:  Then one day as I was in the book store, following Barbara Sher’s advice, to look at the covers of the books and find those that caught my attention, I saw the book called, The Essential Wooden, A Lifetime of Lessons and Leaders, and it caught my eye, so I picked it up.  I know about John Wooden, he has this fantastic coaching record at UCLA, so that was kind of interesting to me.  I read in the front of the jacket cover, and Coach Wooden said,&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt; “There is nothing fancy in what I teach about team building.  Nothing that requires a special gift, privilege or access to power.  Rather, it requires dedication to certain principles and concepts which I include in this book.” &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;That short little note made me curious and that’s what Barbara was telling us.  We need a short little summary statement about what we’re talking about that catches people’s attention. &lt;br /&gt;So I went to the back of the book and I want to read this to you so we all understand the credibility that this man deserves. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;“John Wooden and his historic UCLA dynasty won ten NCA March Madness championships in twelve years including 88 straight games.  He was named coach of the century by ESPN and hailed as a Leadership Genius by corporate America.” &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Knowing what I do about college basketball and that’s not too much, I knew that was quite impressive but later as I looked in the earlier parts of the book, I found an even more impressive thing; Wooden coached basketball for over 40 years and during that time he only had one losing season.  And that was the first year he coached!! &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;That still sends chills up my back!  That is absolutely amazing.  It says without question, without question, that this man has principles and concepts and understanding and leadership that speaks to these young men, these young college athletes and helps them bring out their absolute best and make very successful teams! &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;As I read the book I thought, “This is it!!  These are not just principles for young male athletes, these are principles for life!  These are principles for everyone!”  And then I thought of the title that may well be the title of this book, why didn’t he coach the rest of us?  Coaching the Rest of us is what we need here. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I changed my statement slightly to include what John Wooden would say because here was his first and foremost concept/principle: &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;First you must understand the definition of success.  Success is not determined by fame or fortune or being number one.  You must understand that we are all given a certain potential unique to each one of us and our “…first responsibility is to make the utmost effort to bring forth that potential in service to our team.  For me, that is success.” – John Wooden &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;As I read that, I thought, “You know that’s almost exactly like my idea!  A certain unique potential is the same thing as your unique characteristics, your strongest Attributes.  And to use them in service to your Team, well that is even stronger than doing it for your own happiness and the happiness of your loved ones.  For those of us that are not great young male college athletes, service to your Team is service to your family and to your loved ones!!  That is the same thing as my message!!  That is our Purpose in Life under John Wooden’s principles!! &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;By using this, Wooden taught his teams how to win but he taught them that by teaching them to believe in a higher standard than victory.  He never mentioned winning to them, he just taught them the fundamentals it would take to be winners and successful in their lives.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So there is where I became so convinced that this is what I want to do.  When  people challenged me, “How are you going to teach this?”  I concluded that the way to do it is we’re going have to hold a summer camp.  We’re going to have to provide a voluntary program that the kid will love just as I loved summer camps when I was a kid and many people did.  We went to the Falls Creek Baptist Assembly and I liked it. One guy I talked with went to a summer school and his daughter went to a summer school and they loved it. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Then I realized, we have school buildings all over this country sitting idle for three months of the year!!  It’s amazing.  The way that came about was because in the olden days the kids had to go home and help their parents harvest the crops and it was miserably hot and they had no air conditioning. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So the reasons for that absence from school during the summer have just vanished over time. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And another thought was that we could be using those facilities so much better now, what about the teachers?  You know, nationwide our teachers are underpaid and underappreciated.  The “No Child Left Behind” act has been misinterpreted.  They are saying when a child is not ready to learn that it is the teacher’s fault.  And the teachers aren’t getting paid enough so we’re not attracting and giving them all of best quality teachers that are possible.  Many of the best quality teachers can barely make a good living at it.  So here’s another opportunity, we can pay our teachers so much more by employing them more of the year! &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But how could we do that?  You couldn’t go through and immediately raise everybody’s taxes so initially at least it’s going to have to be privately funded. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So here is a summary of the idea of the summer camp that will be in my book.  I’ll just go through it briefly and then ask for your feedback.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It is going to be a thirty day program. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It’s an all volunteer program.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;There will be a one night orientation where they prepare the young adults for the upcoming camp.  The leaders will explain to all of the program volunteers that there will be absolutely no drugs, no alcohol, no fighting, no cigarettes, no music.  There will be no rebellion, there’s going to be big men to take you down if you want to cause problems.  Then they tell them what they need to bring and when they are to show up. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The video I have of that course is called the “Youth At Risk Program”.  It was a spinoff of Landmark Education’s Program called “The Forum.”  It was spun off to a non-profit corporation because of the very severe problems of San Francisco at that time, 20 or more years ago.  I investigated that program and got a tape.  It shows two different five day courses where the Breakthrough Foundation presented one course in Cincinnati, Ohio and one course in London and in both cases they took 30 some kids.  (See Y.O.U. - Youth Opportunities Unlimited in Cincinnati)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The one in Cincinnati in 1994? had 38 kids and they had 100 volunteers from the community that went with them.  They spent five days.  They had four or five professionals from the Breakthrough Foundation and the method of the training which I would say would be our first five day basic training is that they first start them off with exercise.  They take them out and they run and they challenge them to perform strongly so they wear them out so that they are able to sit still and listen. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;They have 10 to 12 hours a day of training, just class work, explanations, so that the kids get to understand what this is all about, get the proper perspective on life.  And then they start running through a series of questions to get the kids to think and to open up about the problems in their lives. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And what they find is that as one person reveals what their problems in their life are, one guy, his mom is a drug addict, and there were times she does this or that.  One of them drinks all the time, so he just drinks with his mom.  One of them, his Dad died of cancer and it destroyed him.  He doesn’t know how to handle it.  He’s the man of the house and he’s not ready for that responsibility. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But as these guys talk this, all the rest of the kids are hearing it.  It’s therapeutic for everybody in the whole place.  Every day they are still going through their exercise program and little practice drills and so forth, where they get to trust each other as friends.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;By the fourth day, these kids are really getting on top of it.  They are beginning to recognize what their problems are, make commitments to change in their lives and what they want to do and what they want out of their lives. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;When they brought them back on the fifth day, they had an auditorium meeting again and they had all of the parents and all of the volunteers.  The cheering crowds were there as they came into town just as when they were when they left and when they arrived at the camp. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So these kids are now a part of a team.  They had an assembly when they returned to town and any of the kids that wanted to tell the group what they discovered at this camp got up and it’s very moving.  It’s very touching whenever they give their discovery; when they say&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;“Now I understand Mom, I’m sorry that I have done all those things to you.  Mom, I love you.” &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So I loved that program.  When I first found it I went to the Kaufman Foundation here in Kansas City and I tried to get them to sponsor one for here in Kansas City and they required that I develop a non-profit corporation and all of that stuff and I just wasn’t in the state at that time to be able to do it so I let it drop. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Now, when I see this program again, I get all excited about it.  Good!!  I get to carry that forward this time! &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We’re going to make that the first week – the basic training.  When they come back after the five days, then there will be two days off, and they will get to volunteer again whether or not they want to continue with the rest of the course.  It will be for 23 more days.  One of the days will basically be a half a day start up with, a half a day when the program is over probably.  A little confusing there. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;There are certain things that we’re going to do for every child or every attendee.  If they already have all of this and understand then we will verify. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;They’re all going to have an email address and be taught how to make another email address. &lt;br /&gt;We’re going to make sure they all understand:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;How to use the computer and the internet. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;How to use Word programs and put in a table of contents and headings in it. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;How to send emails. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;They’re going to be set up with the right kind of directories on their computer and they’re going to have their files filed appropriately. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We’re going to start out by sending each one of them an email that contains the instructions for every thing they are to be able to do. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In addition, we’ll provide them a print out of how to do it and we will walk them through the print out and they can make notes on it as we set them up here. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So this is the basic thing they have to be able to do to get through this training. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Every day of the 23 days there will be early exercises. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This will be just like training for a job.  This is their job. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;There will be daily classes going over the principles and concepts such as the definition of success according to John Wooden and how it applies to them; understanding the meaning of their potential; how to find out what their potential is, what to do with it. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And then there will be the development of what we call plays.  It will be like John Wooden’s basketball plays.  But it will be acting out of the situations in which these kids find themselves.  The problems that they have in their lives and how they are to handle them, how they are to think and act and exactly what they are to say based upon the principles of John Wooden. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And those plays will continue to be developed.  If a participant says yes, but if I say that, Dad’s going to knock me down or whatever, then that’s another play!  We will develop a new play about how to handle that situation.  Each of the plays will be named and these plays will be practiced over and over and over during the whole period so that the kids become automatic and very self-confident in the way they handle them. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;John Wooden said&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;“You’ve all heard about the four laws of learning.  They’ve been around for a long time: explanation, demonstration, imitation and repetition.  But I like to tell people that there are actually eight laws of learning:  explanation, demonstration, imitation and repetition, repetition, repetition, repetition, and repetition”. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;That is the concept that we will use in this training program.  We are going to repeat these, we are going to repeat them with exhilaration until these kids, just like John Wooden’s basketball teams, respond automatically and correctly with confidence and pride!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Now, there are some more things we are going to do. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We are going to take these kids to the public library, the major public library in town, and then another library.  At both libraries we want to make sure that they sit down, that they use a pc that is provided there, that they find a book in the library, that they sign onto the internet from the library, that they do a research paper right there on the internet that they send to themselves and the Program Director in an email. They will copy their Senators and Representatives and Governors and parents and anyone that they know their email addresses!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Their research paper must include some of their thoughts about the information they have copied and it must have a proper URL so that they or anyone else can go to that same place. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We’re going to teach them that researching on the internet is how they find their Potential in life, those things that they are interested in.  This is just the overview of it. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It’s going to be 23 days of intensive drills.  I expect them to be having to start by about six or seven in the morning and not get through until 10 o’clock at night.  They will need to publish a new research paper every day and keep a copy of it in their Potentials Word document.  At the end of the summer camp program there will be at least monthly, maybe DAILY LIKE THE BASKETBALL DRILLS MAYBE EVERY OTHER DAY,  every week or two, a follow-up meeting with the whole team will get back together and they will share the problems they’ve experienced, what they’ve found.   &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;They will share the successes they had in bringing forth their ‘Potential’ in service to their families and loved ones.  They will develop new plays by themselves and with their counselors based on John Wooden’s principles just as the leaders of their team did earlier. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We will carry that on for the whole season.  Their season will be that year when they volunteer. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;That’s the summary of the idea about how the summer camp program would work and I apologize for it being so long and I will entertain any questions, suggestions, ideas, or reactions.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Patrice:  I have a couple of questions.  Maybe you said it and I missed it but what’s the age group that you are targeting?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Jerry:  I think this has to be in the high school group.  Probably from sophomore to senior.  However, I noticed that the program in Cincinnati is going from age 8 to age 16.  This is a little uncertain yet.  If you start out with a prototype session, you generally have to pick one age group.  If you can get funding for it, if it works, then you probably have multiple sessions going at the same time because we have plenty of school facilities around.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Patrice:  And it’s not residential right, it’s just a day camp?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Jerry:  During the first week is actually offsite. ( I would love to make it 30 days offsite if we can get the funding!!) The rest of the time it’s a day camp.  But like I said, it will be from early in the morning until late at night because of the research and documentation assignments.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Patrice:  So the day camp actually still runs like the morning until 10 at night?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Jerry:  Yes.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Patrice:  Do you want to hear a parent’s reaction?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Jerry:  Certainly.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Patrice:  I don’t want to have to have them there at 6 in the morning and not pick them up 10 at night.  You might want to think about that.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Jerry:  Good point.  You know what we could do there, all right, that’s a good point, so the program will have to deliver and pick them up.  We can provide, I think we can get our funding to also provide, transportation.  It would be wonderful if we could provide housing and food and clothing and everything for the entire summer camp.  But we wouldn’t want to take young kids away from their families too long.  Those details will have to be worked out.  Maybe we could have visitation or a weekend pass or something like that.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Patrice:  Maybe.  That would be good.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;X:  The five day basic training, that’s the one where it would be introducing them to the idea and then they can volunteer whether to come back or not to come back for the rest of the month?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Jerry:  That’s my idea at this point.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;X:  And one other question.  The exercise part of it.  You’d have to take in account, of course, kids that have been, not used to exercising that much and maybe have to have different levels of ability to take into account – just a thought there.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;X:  Yes we would have to accommodate people with physical disabilities.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Patty:  How would you determine if it was successful?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Jerry:  Good question, Patty.  Let me think just one second here.  In the Breakthrough Foundation Program I saw success.  What I saw was that these kids when they left were bitter, fighting, completely out of control.  And when they came back, they stood in front of a group of 200 plus people with a microphone in their hand and said,&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;“I understand now and I am committing my life to this and this is what I am going to do with my future.” &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;That’s success right there.  But I think success would have to be from the basic training program, success would be your sign up rates for the rest of the program. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Success for the rest of the program would be how they react to the follow-up meetings, what they bring in. &lt;br /&gt;If they just drop out and never show up, that wouldn’t be successful.  If they come back and if they assist their teammates to work out new plays and to practice their old plays and the new plays about how to handle bad situations in their lives, if they report successes and what they have accomplished for their families, that’s where we would have real success.  In between that, I don’t know.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;X:  Would you check how they did during the rest of the year?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Jerry:  Give me an example of what you mean?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;X:  Well, you’ve got them for a few weeks in the summer, but would you follow-up with those kids, see what a difference it made in their lives.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Jerry:  Yes.  We will have follow-up meetings for the whole season.  But I think it would be at least through the next school year.  From this summer through the next school year is your ‘season’.  This is your team, the 38 people that volunteered for this particular camp program.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;X:  On the orientation of the teachers, did I hear you say that just one night because I think it might be longer than that you need. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Jerry:  No, That is orientation of the children; the young people that are going to the program.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;X:  I’m sorry, I thought you said the teachers.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Jerry:  Now the teachers, you are absolutely right.  We are going to have to have training for them.  Initially it will be provided by the Breakthrough Foundation.  They are a professional group that does this all the time.  They would come in and train the teachers but in the course I saw, there was virtually nothing that the volunteers did besides be there, to be the cheering group, to be there and support them, mentally and in any way needed. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;When the course was over, I thought it was fantastic, the last day of the five days just before they got back on the bus to take them back home, they had the young people turn around and face all the volunteers that were in a circle around them and just walk up and look at each one of them in the eye.  The circle of participants just rotated inside the big circle of volunteers and they were to just look them in the face and I guess the idea was to say thank you, although they didn’t even tell them to do that. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It was amazing.  The kids were crying, they were hugging the volunteers, they were so thankful.  You would never believe it was the same group of kids who started five days earlier.  I’m not sure how much training they need but there definitely has to be training.  On the website in Cincinnati for that program, it says, training will be provided.  They want volunteers.  They want 100 volunteers at all times.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;X:  Would you be using their program or are you using John Wooden’s program?  I’m confused.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Jerry:  The idea here is that we would be using their program as the basic training, especially for the youth at risk.  But the rest of the program would be based completely on John Wooden’s principles. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;X:  So the first week is theirs and then the rest is yours.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Jerry:  Yes&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;X:  Do you think you’ll write your book and give it to the volunteers?  Do you think you will have your book written in time to give it to all the volunteers?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Jerry:  Certainly!  My book will be done!!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Patrice:  When you talk about the role playing and keep going in deeper and deeper into their life situations, who do you see facilitating that?  Do you feel like you need someone, because as you were saying, these young people from dysfunctional families and probably some pretty heavy emotional issues, the need to have some professional?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;X:  A school psychologist kind of person or something?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Patrice:  Yeah, and there’s a whole program called psycho-drama which is using drama to work through psychological issues.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Jerry:  Good point.  At the Basic training we would have the Breakthrough Foundation trained staff and those that they train to assist them.  I think who ever said this school psychologist is an excellent idea for the rest of the program. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The beauty of saying that we’re going to start out, at least, and we may have to continue with, private funding, is that you don’t have to worry about it as much that you would using public funding.  If we can present this program to the right people, I’m telling you, if this book comes out and Oprah Winfrey believes in it she is going to give us 500 million dollars to make it happen for this country!!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;X:  You can’t have a better person behind you.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Jerry:  That’s right.  You know what, there is just so much money out there.  Mrs. Walton just died, of Walmart fame.  She had 16 billion dollars that she just turned over to the family trust to be used for education. &lt;br /&gt;Mr. Buffet, Warren Buffet, the second richest man in the world is turning over, at a billion and a half a year, 35 billion dollars to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to be used for humanitarian purposes, for the good of mankind. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Bill and Melinda have another 35 billion dollars in their trust fund.  There is so much money that’s just dying to find a place with a program that really works so that they can start to make a difference because they recognize that we have a lot of problems in our public education system and our youth.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;X:  You say the private funding frees you to pursue it the way you want to without the government’s regulations that are attached to public money.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Jerry:  Right.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;X:  This John Wooden, is he still living?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Jerry:  Yes he is.  He is in his nineties and I suspect his health is not too good.  He’s still around and he has a good little website out there.  But I warn you as I told Eileen after she went out to look him up on his website, it’s good, there are some good quotes in there and stuff.   But, you can’t get the real appreciation of John Wooden by that website.  It’s not very good in that respect.  When you look at the dustcover of the “Essential Wood, A Lifetime of Lessons on Leaders and Leadership,” you begin to get the feeling of it. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;By the way, I’m going to have these books on my website real soon where you can order them from &lt;a href="http://jerrywwillis.com/"&gt;http://jerrywwillis.com&lt;/a&gt; . Bill Walton is just effusive in his praises of Coach Wooden and I see him in their little interviews together and that sort of thing. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;When you read these testimonials you’ll realize that John Wooden made a tremendous impact on many, if not all, of the people he touched.  I want to read this part to you. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt; “Now I’m 44 years old and I’m telling my four teenage sons what Coach Wooden used to tell his players.  I’m even writing his maxims on their lunch boxes and then listening to them complain about it.  Just like I used to complain.  They’ll see, my kids will learn.  Soon enough they’ll come to understand and appreciate the great wisdom of a very wise man, Coach John Wooden.  I have nothing but the greatest love and respect for Coach.  Thank you for your sacrifices, gifts and patience.” -   Bill Walton. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;That is the kind of testimonies that are given here.  Kareem Abdul Jabar also gave his.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;X:  I wonder if John would want to contribute to your camp?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Jerry:  Yes, that’s a good point.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;X:  Well the main thing is that he would give permission to use his name is a big deal.  That’s worth money right there. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Jerry:  I sent him an email through his website and I will be following up on that to try to get his permission.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;X:  It sounds like this is something that you really thought through a lot Jerry and are very passionate about.  My only advice, not that you’re looking for advice, is to keep talking with people and young people, people who have children that age and that particular population.  Because some of what you described, like what they will be doing, especially in terms of the computer and stuff, I’m thinking, and having three teenagers, that they know all that stuff but you’re not talking really about my kids. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Jerry:  I am probably not talking about your kids.  But that’s wonderful.  If they already know all of that but do they know how to get it for free in the public libraries?  Do they know how to get all of this stuff without having a penny? &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;X:  My experience has been, with them, yes.  But maybe not in inner city schools or things like that.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Jerry:  Right.  Good point though, excellent.  I have a meeting coming up this Sunday with a neighbor of mine whose son inherited, at a young age, $50,000.  He got into drugs and was eventually killed shortly thereafter.  The man is a really sharp guy and when I mentioned my book to him, he said, Man, we need something for these schools, for these kids.  I’m thrilled to get to go down there and talk with him.  He’s the kind of guy I want to get his feedback.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Patty:  Do you think that there are things that you could do to test out portions of this program or do you think like, do a program in a school during the school year?  Or will you just look for funding and go for a big part in a big way, right away?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Jerry:  Well, the first thing I’m doing is I’ve got a call in also to the Cincinnati Youth At Risk Program.  They called theirs: Y.O.U., Youth Opportunities Unlimited and it’s been going on maybe since they did their first Youth At Risk Program.  I’ve got a call in to their executive director.  I’m going to be continuing to pursue them and I’m going to see if maybe they won’t try an introductory program for the basic training part.  And the reason is, because they already have everything put together.  They’ve got the facilities, they’ve got the people, they’ve got everything going so they, all they would have to do is, adjust the criteria and try Coach Wooden’s principles here and see how it came out.  See how it compares.  So that’s the first thing that I’m trying to do.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Eileen:  Jerry I’m going to communicate with you on the email, I’m going to drop out now for a bit.  I’ll talk to you in the email.  Bye everybody.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Jerry:  Anybody else too, I will let any of you go, anybody that has any ideas, I would love to hear them.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;X:  What sort of ideas do you feel you need?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Jerry:  Just in general, give me a score of 1 – 10, how good of an idea is it?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;X:  You mean as far as the camp goes?&lt;br /&gt;Jerry:  Yes.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;X:  Well, I think you have a good model for your basic training, I mean that sounds like it’s a program that’s already been tested out and has parameters and all that stuff and then what you’re adding on to that. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I guess I believe in the foundation of it, the principles that you’re trying to teach.  I have questions about the time commitment, the length of it, and all that sort of thing.  If you’ll be able to get that kind of response from young people but definitely, you know, it sounds like the principles that you’re trying to get across are very worthwhile.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Jerry:  Okay, give me a score.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;X:  What’s the modifications?  Because, you know, I’ve been thinking about that transportation thing even more.  The population that you’re reach absolutely will not transport their kids at those hours.  If there’s not public transportation, they probably won’t transport them at all.  But if there’s public transportation, then that’s another thing and that’s what you probably need.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Jerry:  We might even be able to get the use of the school buses.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;X:  I think you’ll, I agree with Patrice, that you’ll probably need to change the hours in order to deal with the parents but I also think you’ve got to think about your municipal employees’ unions.  You can’t just go in and open the schools yourself.  You are going to need to have school employees there and you’re going to have unions to deal with and I expect they’re also going to keep your hours shorter.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Jerry:  That’s a Good Point.  Thank you.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;X:  It seems very ambitious and that’s a great thing and a frightening thing.  So I think that your preparation of a description of it is really good because you’re going to need to recruit a lot of people to help you launch this.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;X:  And something comes to my mind.  I think Patty asked if you were going to start small or just jump right in.  Even through like the guidance offices and stuff, particularly in the middle schools, they run all kinds of groups for the children throughout the school year even.  Like the ones in our school here called, Banana Splits, for children whose parents are divorced and just different things like that.  So even trying out one based on John’s principles might be a way to test the waters and see the amount of interest is and the difference that it makes in the young people.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Jerry:  You know I am starting at the high end of this thing and there’s no reason why you couldn’t start a program after school or weekends or whatever and start teaching these principles. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Although, it just kind of seemed to me that one of the reasons I chose 23 days, I think maybe I didn’t say that to you, is that because I understand that to adopt a habit is 22 days long.  If you do something 22 days in a row, you’ve made a habit out it and 23 days will give us just enough time to make it a habit. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Every decision that you make, that every situation that you encounter, you mentally go through the process of going back to this purpose,&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;“Is this in the best interest of my family?  Is this in my best interest?  Is this an honorable and the right thing to do?” &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If you get these kids to always think in that way, if you could do that partly in other programs, but when you think in those terms, you come to the right answers most of the time.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;X:  I think it sounds ambitious.  I think you elevator speech needs to be shorter or you need to have a shorter version of it in addition to that version because there are going to be times when you’re not going to get to say that much and you need to get it down to a sound bite.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Jerry:  When you asked me before, I couldn’t even think.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;X:  That’s why you need to have one is because it’s so hard to condense it.  You have so much to say about it and&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;X:  Some people are only going to the third floor.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Jerry:  Good point but I thought it was pretty short.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;X:  Maybe we couldn’t tell where it ended.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Jerry:  Well now that may be true. &lt;br /&gt;How can young adults create a purpose-driven life if they’re turned off by religion?  That’s really not part of the elevator speech, it’s the introduction to it. &lt;br /&gt;This book is for young adults and the adults who care about them how to apply the principles of the greatest coach ever, John Wooden, to achieve real and lasting success in every aspect of their lives.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;X:  But this sounds like a speech and we’re tuning out before you even get through that much.  You’re on TV and somebody just stuffed a microphone in front of your face and you have to say something fast, I would start out with,&lt;br /&gt; “A camp”  Because then we know what it is.&lt;br /&gt; “And it’s a camp for the purpose-driven, it’s a non-religious camp to learn how to live a purpose-driven life.” &lt;br /&gt;Then if you get asked how do you teach that?  You say,&lt;br /&gt; “we use John Wooden’s principles.  He is the best coach of all times.’ &lt;br /&gt;So that you’re able, because you know how short those sound bites are on TV, that’s what you want.  You want that sound bite because it’s short enough that it sticks in people’s minds when they walk away and then they might actually come back another day and say, tell me more or you might hook them right away and they might say tell me more. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;You might get a chance to say it on TV and you’re not going to get more than like five words.  You can say more but they’ll look for five somewhere in the middle and cut them out and so if you pick the five it’s a lot better.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Jerry:  Excellent, thank you again!  You’re great at this!!  You ought to do, go into the business of writing elevator speeches!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;X:  I’m getting out of that business.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Jerry:  I worked on the non-religious thing quite a bit and I kept concluding that I better stay away from that, WAY away from it because it just turns off so many people immediately and it’s a large number of the people. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;X:  You might also, I don’t know if he’s trade-marked that or anything like that.  You might want to do some sort of legal check on that one.  There’s a trademark site that the government runs where you can look up trademarks.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Jerry:  I have a meeting with an attorney in just a couple more days.  Part of a group legal plan I have and I’m going to go over and ask him about it.  Now which part do you think is, that I need to check?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;X:  The purpose-driven life, if he’s trademarked the purpose-driven life.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Jerry:  Oh yes, I’m sure he has but I will check.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;X:  You want to avoid it and I think you can turn that into Living on Purpose or Living With Purpose and people will make the connection.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Jerry:  Yes, sure.  Thank you!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;X:  And the more you can make it your phrase so that when anybody says it, everyone knows exactly what it means and whose program they’re talking about.  You might do better with marketing it.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Jerry:  Right, okay.  Excellent ideas.  Thank you.  What else about trademarks and stuff, do you know anything about that.  Like when I mention Bill Walton and try to quote him or any of these other famous people that I’m quoting?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;X:  You can do short quotes of them but when you start tweaking their intellectual property and calling it your own, you get in trouble.  But that’s copyright.  Trademark is an actual, registered set of words or single word or an image that used to indicate a company in interstate commerce.  Now if you come up with a trademark of your own, you can put the TM on it temporarily but then you have to apply.  It’s not an actual trademark until you get that R in the circle from the Office of Patents and Trademarks.   And you can only apply for a trademark once you’ve begun doing business across state lines.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Jerry:   You know there is an interesting thing too.  Because of this legal plan, I’m going to go ahead and take advantage of it, I’m going to set up a trust fund that will include this information.  I’m going to do it in the state of Kansas because that just happens to be where I’ve got the attorney but I live in the state of Missouri and I just wondered about, once I do that, does that add any credibility to it in some way?  Or take away from it in some way?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;X:  That’s kind of cool. Will was born in the town called Stratford-on-Avon (Avon is a river running by or through the town) April 26, 1564 about the time our oldest known ancestor was a young man just beginning his family and career in Wiltshire county an estimated 50 miles to the Southwest.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I have never been interested in reading William Shakespeare plays because the little bit that I read seemed so silly and boring to me. But this book caught my eye as a way to learn about the times when our earliest known ancestors were in that area and at the same time to learn something about the most famous writer in history. I have been enjoying the book very much so far and recommend it to you. And then, to my great surprise and pleasure, I found a reference to one of our relatives in the book. So I am quoting here from the book to show the reference and to give you the pleasure of learning a little about the times and explore whether or not you might want to purchase the book, and to learn a bit about the plays of that time and the likely circumstances of our relatives.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Beginning on Page 30 there is a discussion about Will’s Dad being the equivalent of the Mayor in their home town. As such he had to approve any theatrical groups and their presentation before it could be offered to the public. So there is the probability that Will was introduced to traveling Theatrical groups from an early age.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Page 30 - “In his old age, a man named Willis, born the same year as Will, recalled a play (now lost), called The Cradle of Security, that he saw in Gloucester-thirty-eight miles from Stratford, when he was a child. On arriving in town, the players, Willis wrote, followed the usual routine: they presented themselves to the mayor, informed him what nobleman’s servants they were, and requested a license for performing in public. The mayor granted the license and appointed the company to give their first performance before the aldermen and other officials of the town. ‘At such a play,’ Willis remembered, ‘my father took me with him and made me stand between his legs, as he sat upon one of the benches, where we saw and heard very well.’ The experience was a remarkably intense one for Willis: ‘This sight took such an impression in me,’ he wrote, ‘that when I came towards man’s estate, it was as fresh in my memory as if I had seen it newly acted.’&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;My thoughts from reading the above:&lt;br /&gt;This Willis was born in 1564 so was probably the son of our oldest known ancestor.&lt;br /&gt;His Dad was probably our oldest known ancestor.&lt;br /&gt;His Dad was a town alderman or other official of the town since he attended the special performance.&lt;br /&gt;This Willis family lived in Gloucester at that time and possibly had for a number of years or even generations.&lt;br /&gt;Willis knows about the routines of obtaining permission and licenses so he was probably taught and learned as a young man.&lt;br /&gt;This Willis must have been well educated to be able to write about his memories.&lt;br /&gt;His Dad was also probably well educated and that is why he was an alderman or town official.&lt;br /&gt;This Willis’ writings must still be available and might contain a lot of additional interesting information!!&lt;br /&gt;As I have thought, our ancestors were probably pretty well-to-do since Henry was able to become a Friend’s church minister in London after the great fire and then to move to Oyster Bay in Long Island for a number of months and then to buy a tract of land and have a family and be a supporter of the Friends religious group.&lt;br /&gt;Shakespeare and his plays were touring the countryside and were probably in our ancestor’s home town and seen by them.&lt;br /&gt;There must have been a playhouse with benches like those of the famous Globe theatre in London.&lt;br /&gt;The theatre must have been full since young Willis had to stand. Plays were very popular during the period especially Shakespeare’s.&lt;br /&gt;Since the experience was so intense for young Willis, he may have been an artistic type person himself.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Page 31 - “For his part, Shakespeare’s contemporary Willis remembered all his life what he had seen at Gloucester: a king lured away from his sober, pious counselors by three seductive ladies. “In the end they got him to lie down in a cradle upon the stage,” he recalled, “where these three ladies, joining in a sweet song, rocked him asleep, that he snorted again; and in the meantime closely conveyed under the cloths wherewithal he was covered, a vizard, like a swine’s snout, upon his face, with three wire chains fastened thereunto, the other end whereof being holden severally by those three ladies, who fall to singing again, and then discovered his face that the spectators might see how they had transformed him.’ The spectators must have found it very exciting. Some of the older ones probably remembered the swinish face of Henry VIII, and all in the audience knew that it was only under special circumstances that they could publicly share the thought that the monarch was a swine.”&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;My Thoughts on the above:&lt;br /&gt;Willis was a contemporary meaning he lived in the same time and in approximately the same place and circumstances.&lt;br /&gt;Gloucester must have been the home of our relative at the time.&lt;br /&gt;Willis was old enough to remember the play yet small enough to stand between his Dad’s legs as he sat upon the bench. Probably about 1570 when he was 6 years old.&lt;br /&gt;Since Willis said they were able to hear and see very well they must have had seats close to the front. That probably means they were at the higher end of the important men of the town.&lt;br /&gt;It also means that the theatre must have been fairly large and had some seats where one could not see and hear well.&lt;br /&gt;King Henry VIII was the one that formed the Church of England, The Anglican Church, breaking away from the pope and the Roman Catholic church. He was the father of the Queen Bloody Mary who unbelievably viciously tortured and killed all the Protestants she could find.&lt;br /&gt;Bloody Mary was an ancestor of King James who authorized and had printed the King James version of the Holy Bible.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Page 31 - “Young Will is likely to have seen something similar. The plays in repertory in the 1560s and 70s were for the most part ‘morality plays,” or “moral interludes,” secular sermons designed to show the terrible consequences of disobedience, idleness, or dissipation. Typically, a character-an embodied abstraction with a name like Mankind or Youth-turns away from a proper guide such as Honest Recreation or Virtuous Life and begins to spend his time with Ignorance, All-for-Money, or Riot.&lt;br /&gt;‘Huffa, huffa! Who calleth after me?&lt;br /&gt;I am Riot, full of jollity.&lt;br /&gt;My heart is light as the wind,&lt;br /&gt;And all on riot is my mind. ‘&lt;br /&gt;(The Interlude of Youth)&lt;br /&gt;“It is rapidly downhill from here-Riot introduces Youth to his friend Pride; Pride introduces him to his glamorous sister Lechery; Lechery lures him to the tavern-and it looks like it will all end badly. Sometimes it does end badly-in the play Willis saw, the king who is transformed into a swine is later carried away to punishment by wicked spirits-but more typically, something happens to awaken the hero’s slumbering conscience just in time. In The Interlude of Youth, Charity, reminding the sinner of Jesus’ great gift to him, frees him from the influence of Riot and restores him to the company of Humility. In The Castle of Perseverance, Penance touches Mankind’s heart with his lance and saves him from his wicked companions, the Severn Deadly Sins. In Wit and Science, the hero Wit, asleep in the lap of Idleness, is transformed into a fool, complete with cap and bells, but he is saved when he catches sight of himself in a mirror and realizes that he looks ‘like a very ass!’ Only after he is sharply whipped by Shame and taught by a group of strict schoolmasters-Instruction, Study, and Diligence-is Wit restored to his proper appearance and able to celebrate his marriage to Lady Science.”&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;My thoughts on the above:&lt;br /&gt;Obviously Willis wrote more about the play since it has been lost and yet he quotes here what Willis saw in the play.&lt;br /&gt;So we have an author early in the history of our family that has a body of work we haven’t yet seen!&lt;br /&gt;Since Willis wrote so much about this play he was probably financially secure to be able to devote his time and thought to plays.&lt;br /&gt;That was a sign of a ‘Gentleman’ to have the ability to entertain oneself with plays and idleness.&lt;br /&gt;Actually Shakespeare’s plays might be kind of fun if someone would translate them into modern English since they would give an almost perfect insight into the lifestyles of the times.&lt;br /&gt;The English language is quite changed over the last 500 years and you must know the history of the words and conditions before you can appreciate all that is in the plays.&lt;br /&gt;Religion has been a very significant factor in the history of mankind and our family.&lt;br /&gt;The advent of the Church of England probably began the change in religions by showing that everyone did not have to be subject to the Pope and the Catholic religion.&lt;br /&gt;Protestant religions began to come into being and caused great turmoil for centuries as religious groups have fought.&lt;br /&gt;The Muslim faith had caused great wars prior to the Protestants coming into being.&lt;br /&gt;There was a great need to break free of complete submission to the King and these plays and their acceptance began to show that need.&lt;br /&gt;Our ancestors broke with both of the standard religions of the day and became devoted Friends (later to be called Quakers).&lt;br /&gt;George Fox the founder of the Friends church was in the area and converted our ancestors about 1660.&lt;br /&gt;Our ancestors were leaders in the Friends church.&lt;br /&gt;The more rapid transmission of ideas through plays and the written word changed the world just as it is doing today.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;There are a number of Bibliographical notes about source material that will be interesting to research. On yeomen, the social class from which Shakespeare descended, see Mildred Campbell, The Enlish Yeoman under Elizabeth and the Early Stuarts (New Haven: Yale University Press&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;http: id="google?toolsdestinationmap=" toolsdestinationmap="england?toolsdestinationmap=" toolsdestinationmap="england?toolsdestinationmap=" toolsdestinationmap="england?toolsdestinationmap=" toolsdestinationmap="england"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The above points to a map of England that shows Gloucester and not too far away is Devizes where our earliest ancestors lived.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;&lt;&gt;&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Notice Devizes which is due East of Bath about 15-20 miles and it is about&lt;br /&gt;50 miles Southwest of Gloucester.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;&lt;&gt;&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In the above map We can see Westbury just Southwest of Devizes about 10-15 miles.&lt;br /&gt;Henry Willis named the town of Westbury, NY after this town in England which was close to his home of Devizes and probably was his home for a period of years.&lt;br /&gt;The following gives some interesting history of the area:&lt;br /&gt;A BRIEF HISTORY OF GLOUCESTER&lt;br /&gt;By Tim Lambert&lt;br /&gt;ROMAN GLOUCESTER&lt;br /&gt;Gloucester began as a Roman town. It lies at the first point where the river Severn can be easily crossed so it was a natural place to build a town. About 49 AD the Romans built a fort to guard the river crossing at Kingsholm. In 64 AD they built a new fort on the site of Gloucester town centre.&lt;br /&gt;About 75 AD the Roman army moved on but the site of the fort was turned into a town for retired soldiers. The new town was called Glevum. The Roman town was laid out in a grid pattern. In the centre of the town was a forum. This was a market place lined with shops and public buildings. However in the 4th century Roman civilisation went into decline. The last Roman soldiers left Britain in 407 AD. Afterwards most Roman towns were abandoned.&lt;br /&gt;For more information about Roman Britain click here. &lt;http:&gt;&lt;br /&gt;SAXON GLOUCESTER&lt;br /&gt;After the Romans left Britain Gloucester was probably abandoned although there may have been a small number of farmers living inside the walls and farming the land outside.&lt;br /&gt;The Saxons captured Gloucester in 577 AD after they won a battle against the native Celts. We do not know if there were people living in Gloucester at that time.&lt;br /&gt;In the late 7th century the Saxons founded a monastery at Gloucester and the town began to revive. Craftsmen and merchants came to live in Gloucester once again. In the early 8th century a writer called Gloucester 'one of the noblest cities in the kingdom'.&lt;br /&gt;In the late 9th century the Saxons created a network of fortified towns called burghs. In the event of a Danish attack all the men in the area would gather in the burgh to fight. Gloucester was made a burgh. In 915 AD men from Gloucestershire gathered in the town then went out to fight the Danes and defeated them in battle.&lt;br /&gt;Gloucester flourished in the 10th century and it had a mint. A suburb grew up outside the North gate.&lt;br /&gt;In 909 AD the remains of St Oswald were brought to Gloucester. In those days people would go on long journeys called pilgrimages to visit the remains of saints. Many people came to Gloucester to visit the remains of St Oswald and they spent money in the town. In 1153 the church which housed St Oswald's shrine was turned into a priory (a small abbey).&lt;br /&gt;For more information about Saxon England click here. &lt;http:&gt;&lt;br /&gt;GLOUCESTER IN THE MIDDLE AGES&lt;br /&gt;William the Conqueror came to Gloucester in 1085 and while he was there he ordered that the Domesday Book be written.&lt;br /&gt;Gloucester may have had a population of about 3,500 in the Middle Ages. By the standards of the time it was a fairly large town. (In those days towns were much smaller than they are today). Gloucester, it was said, ranked 10th in among the towns of England for wealth.&lt;br /&gt;In the late 11th century the Normans built a wooden castle in Gloucester. In the 12th century it was rebuilt in stone. Gloucester was strategically important in the 12th and 13th centuries because there was frequent warfare between the Welsh and the English. The people of Gloucester benefited from the warfare because the garrison of the castle provided a market for their goods.&lt;br /&gt;In 1155 the king gave Gloucester a charter (a document giving the townspeople certain rights).&lt;br /&gt;The main industry in Gloucester was making wool. Raw wool was brought to the town from the Cotswolds. In Gloucester the wool was woven then fulled. That means the wool was cleaned and thickened by pounding it in water and clay. When the wool dried it was dyed.&lt;br /&gt;There was also a large leather industry in Gloucester in the Middle Ages. There were tanners and craftsmen who made things of leather, such as cappers, glovers, shoemakers and glovers. In Gloucester iron was worked to make nails, weapons and tools. Cloth and grain were exported from Gloucester and wine was imported from France. There was also a considerable fishing industry in the Severn.&lt;br /&gt;In towns in the Middle Ages fire was a constant risk since most buildings of wood with thatched roofs. In 1223 a fire destroyed part of Gloucester. As a result thatched roofs were banned.&lt;br /&gt;There was a community of Jews in Gloucester in the 12th century. They were falsely accused of a ritual murder in 1268. In 1275 all Jews were forced to leave Gloucester and go to Bristol.&lt;br /&gt;In the 13th century the friars arrived in Gloucester. Friars were like monks but instead of withdrawing from the world they went out to preach. Franciscan friars arrived in 1231. They were called Grey friars because of the colour of their costumes. Dominican friars, known as Blackfriars, followed in 1239.&lt;br /&gt;In 1327 the body of king Edward II was buried at St Peters Abbey. Afterwards there was a stream of visitors to his tomb, which added to the prosperity of Gloucester.&lt;br /&gt;In the early 15th century the New Inn was built. It was built on the site of an earlier inn, hence the name. However Gloucester declined in the 15th century and the town entered a long economic depression. The main reason was probably increasing competition from other towns in the wool trade. An additional reason may have been the fact that Wales had now been conquered and Gloucester was no longer in a strategic position.&lt;br /&gt;In 1483 Richard III gave Gloucester a new charter. This time the merchants were given the right to elect a mayor and 12 aldermen.&lt;br /&gt;GLOUCESTER IN THE 16th AND 17th CENTURIES&lt;br /&gt;The Fleece Hotel was built as an inn about 1500.&lt;br /&gt;In 1541 Gloucester was given a bishop and the Abbey Church was made the new cathedral. Henry VIII 1509-47 and his son Edward 1547-53 introduced religious changes to England. However Henry's daughter Mary, tried to undo the changes. She burned many Protestants. One of them was John Hooper, Bishop of Gloucester, who was burned for heresy in St Marys Square in 1555.&lt;br /&gt;During the 16th and 17th centuries the wool trade continued to decline. Gloucester also suffered from frequent outbreaks of plague. There were epidemics in 1565, 1573, 1577, 1580, 1593 and 1637.&lt;br /&gt;By the early 17th century Gloucester was less important than it had once been. Nevertheless it was still a fair sized town with a population of about 4,000 in the 16th century.&lt;br /&gt;Gloucester was still a busy port and a market town for the surrounding region. Furthermore although the cloth industry declined pin making boomed in the 17th century.&lt;br /&gt;By the late 17th century the population of Gloucester was probably about 5,000.&lt;br /&gt;In 1540 a grammar school called the Crypt School opened. In 1668 a blue coat charity school opened (it was called that because of the blue school uniforms).&lt;br /&gt;Gloucester suffered severely in the civil war between king and parliament, which lasted from 1642 to 1646. Most of the Southwest supported the king but Gloucester went supported parliament. The people demolished the houses outside the walls to deny cover to the enemy and erected some earthwork defences. In 1643 the king's army laid siege and their cannon fired into Gloucester. Nevertheless Gloucester held out and the royalists withdrew when they heard that a parliamentary army was coming.&lt;br /&gt;Gloucester gained its first fire engine in 1648.&lt;br /&gt;In 1662 the city erected a statue of Charles I to curry favour. King Charles was not impressed however and he ordered the destruction of the city's walls.&lt;br /&gt;GLOUCESTER IN THE 18th CENTURY&lt;br /&gt;Ladybellgate house was built around 1704.&lt;br /&gt;In 1751 the cross which had stood in the town centre for centuries was demolished. An infirmary was opened in 1761. The East gate was demolished in 1778 to make it easier for traffic to enter and leave the town.&lt;br /&gt;In 1768 two new market sites were created to house all the stalls that were impeding traffic and causing congestion. One was in Eastgate, the other in Southgate. In the 1780s North Gate, Outer North Gate and South Gate were all demolished to make way for traffic. In 1791 a new prison was opened on the site of the castle.&lt;br /&gt;In the 18th century the wool industry died out altogether in Gloucester but pin making flourished.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Jerry W. IT TOUCHES ON THE MEANING AND IMPORTANCE OF WORK AND THE CONCEPT OF WORKING ON THE THINGS YOU LOVE AND OF BEING BRUTALLY HONEST WITH YOURSELF. He introduces each entry with a brief comment about it, then shares some wonderful writing that clearly deserved to make it past the internal censor who often paralyzes guys like us.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;a href="http://hollywoodlog.typepad.com/nickerblog/2006/03/untitled_draft_.html" target="_blank" rel="nofollow"&gt;This one&lt;/a&gt;, in particular, hit me where I live:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If you want the secret, I have it.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It's about the work. Regardless of your chosen profession or station in life, the work is what matters. Skip it and you will be caught. Slack off, and others will catch up to you. Cut corners and you will have to answer to yourself at some point.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Of course, that said, the hardest question to answer once it is assumed that hard work is part of the equation is, "Now, what do I work on?" Whatever you love. Work on whatever you love and don't think about the payoff, but instead the road. If part of your road is a continual hunt for a payoff, so be it, but pick a life and career that makes you happy even in the very pursuit of the thing you've chosen.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;MY MESSAGE EXACTLY! There is real wisdom that came from experiences that resulted in the above message!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A couple of days ago, I had an epiphany: Around the time I came to Exile, I drove right off my Road. I started to take an interesting little side trip, (mostly to Prove To Everyone that I could do it) but I lost my map and couldn't find my way back. I was so thoroughly off my road, I didn't even realize I was driving around in circles and down dead end paths until it was way too late, and I was running out of gas.&lt;br /&gt;Set phasers to Ramble, Mr. Worf:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;When I went to the Grand Slam convention last weekend, I kept expecting to feel bad about it. I kept expecting to feel like I was a loser for going without anything new to show off and I really worked myself up about it. I really felt like I was in exactly the same place I was five years ago, and that seriously bummed me out.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But when I got there, that anticipated feeling never arrived. Despite my best initial efforts to really feel like a jerk, I really had a good time. I didn't feel bad; I felt like I was at home. I felt like I was surrounded by like-minded people who all wanted to celebrate this stuff that we all love, and I felt like I had something unique and interesting to share with them. I loved how good and how right that felt, and at some point over the weekend, I realized that even though I was hanging out at a con, I'm not in the same place I was five years ago. I've grown as a writer, I've grown as a husband, and I've grown as a father. I'm smarter and wiser than I was five years ago, even if I haven't accomplished as much as I'd hoped. There is no denying that I haven't done what I'd hoped to do with acting or writing, but in all the other areas that truly matter, I've rolled several critical successes.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;THE ABOVE REALLY RESONATES WITH ME. BECAUSE I HAVE BEEN DISAPPOINTED IN MY CAREER AND THE LEVELS THAT I DIDN'T ACHIEVE IN MY WORK LIFE; BECAUSE I AM DISAPPOINTED THAT I HAVE SO LITTLE MONEY IN SAVINGS AT THIS POINT IN MY LIFE AND THE WORRY IN THE BACKGROUND THAT I/WE MAY NOT HAVE ENOUGH TO CONTINUE TO LIVE 'THE GOOD LIFE'.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;YET AS I HAVE WRITTEN AND THOUGHT TO MYSELF OVER THE PAST FEW YEARS I HAVE COME TO SOME OF THE SAME CONCLUSIONS. I HAVE GROWN AND IMPROVED MYSELF. NOW I AM A WRITER!! I HAVE SOMETHING UNIQUE AND INTERESTING TO SHARE WITH LIKE-MINDED PEOPLE! I HAVE GROWN AS A HUSBAND, AS A FATHER AND AS A GRANDFATHER. I'M SMARTER AND WISER THAN I WAS FIVE YEARS AGO, EVEN IF I HAVEN'T ACCOMPLISHED AS MUCH AS I'D HOPED.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;THERE IS NO DENYING THAT I HAVEN'T DONE WHAT I'D HOPED TO DO WITH MY JOBS OR WITH MY INVESTMENTS AND OTHER AREAS OF MY LIFE, BUT IN ALL THE AREAS THAT TRULY MATTER, I'VE ROLLED IN SEVERAL CRITICAL SUCCESSES.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;AND I HAVE FOUND MY ROAD FOR NOW; THE ROAD THAT I WANT TO BE ON; THE ROAD THAT BRINGS UP POSSIBILITIES IN ME THAT I AM EXCITED ABOUT. AND FOR NOW THAT IS MY CLEAR BLUE SKY; THAT IS WHAT I AM LOOKING AT AND DREAMING ABOUT AND, WHILE I AM AT IT, I AM ENJOYING THE SCENERY ALONG MY ROAD!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;You know how everything happens for a reason? If I hadn't gone to that convention and simply enjoyed the celebration of Sci-Fi and Sci-Fi fandom, if I hadn't realized, accepted, and acknowledged that I really have grown and succeeded in the last five years, I wouldn't have found the map back to my Road. Without it, I never would have been in the right place to have so much fun with the hosting audition, and I wouldn't be waiting right now to hopefully hear good news about that job.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;WHEN I ACCEPTED THAT THINGS HAPPEN FOR A REASON, IT BECAME EASIER TO LOOK AT MY DISAPPOINTMENTS JUST AS SOMETHING I AM GOING TO NEED IN MY FUTURE.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;THEN WHEN I BEGAN TO REALIZE AND ACCEPT AND ACKNOWLEDGE MY SUCCESSES, I BEGAN TO LOOK WITH OPTIMISM FOR INTERESTING NEW THINGS AND NEW POSSIBILITIES. THERE ARE ALWAYS OPPORTUNITIES FOR YOUR TALENTS NO MATTER HOW FAR-FETCHED AND UNLIKELY THEY SEEM AT THE MOMENT.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;FOR ME, THE IDEA OF BECOMING AN AUTHOR HAD NOT REALLY EVER CROSSED MY MIND EVEN THOUGH I GUESS I HAD SOMEWHAT DREAMED OF IT INDIRECTLY FOR THE LAST FEW YEARS. BUT THEN, TIME AND CIRCUMSTANCES AND ALL THE EXPLORATION AND THINKING (RESEARCH) I HAD DONE JUST CAME TOGETHER. IT IS LIKE A RECIPE COMBINING ALL THE RIGHT INGREDIENTS TO MAKE SOMETHING ENTIRELY NEW. I AM NOW MAKING MY FAVORITE; A RICH, MOIST CHOCOLATE CAKE, THAT I HAVE SUCH HIGH HOPES FOR! I THINK I'LL HAVE SOME VANILLA ICE CREAM WITH THAT TOO!!!  COME JOIN ME, PLEASE!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I thought about the last line of Just A Geek the other day, which I thought went something like, "I'm finally cool with all the Star Trek and Sci-Fi stuff, and I'm happy about that."&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I just looked it up, and that's not what it says. It actually says that I'm doing something that really makes me happy, which at the time was writing. It says a lot about my current state of mind, (and the unvarnished truth about myself at this moment) that I thought it said I was happy about my work on Star Trek and I was cool with all that stuff, though, doesn't it?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;WHEN I LOOKED AT THE UNVARNISHED TRUTH ABOUT MYSELF I SAW LOTS OF DISAPPOINTMENT WITH NOT ACHIEVING BIG PROMOTIONS AND POSITIONS AT A MAJOR CORPORATION. BUT I ALSO RECOGNIZED THAT I HAD BEEN GIVEN OPPORTUNITIES AND HAD BEEN FOUND LACKING IN THE SKILLS TO REALLY DO THOSE JOBS WELL. I KNEW THAT IT WAS BETTER TO NOT HAVE THOSE JOBS THAN TO BE LOUSY AT THEM.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;SO I WAS CONFUSED. WHAT THEN SHOULD BE MY DIRECTION AND EMPHASIS? WAS I TO SPEND THE REST OF MY LIFE BEING DISAPPOINTED EVEN THOUGH I KNEW THAT I WOULD HAVE PROBABLY BEEN EVEN MORE DISAPPOINTED HAD I GOTTEN WHAT I THOUGHT I WANTED?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;WHAT I WAS MOST HAPPY ABOUT WAS RESEARCHING AND GATHERING ARTICLES AND SPEECHES THAT MOTIVATED AND INSPIRED ME AND OTHERS. I SPENT MY SPARE TIME ENJOYING WRITING MY THOUGHTS AND DREAMS AND IDEAS.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;OF COURSE I WAS SLOW TO RECOGNIZE THAT THERE WERE EVEN MORE WONDERFUL POSSIBILITIES IN MY WORK DISAPPOINTMENTS AND RESEARCH HAPPINESSES. THERE ARE POSSIBILITIES OF EVEN MORE ENJOYMENT AND HAPPINESS AND ALSO OF MAKING A CONTRIBUTION TO MY FAMILY AND OTHERS.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;THAT WAS ANOTHER OF MY DILUSSIONAL DREAMS. BUT I HAD LONG AGO CONCLUDED THAT IT WAS TOO BOLD AND TOO BIG TO BE EVEN A POSSIBILITY EVEN FOR ME, ESPECIALLY IN VIEW OF MY LACK OF SUCCESS IN BUSINESS.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;IN MY DREAMS THAT BUSINESS SUCCESS WAS TO BE THE PLATFORM FROM WHICH I WOULD MAKE MY EVEN BIGGER CONTRIBUTIONS TO MY FAMILY AND OUR COUNTRY THROUGH POLITICS!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;When I watch TNG on G4, (and I do, almost every night,) no matter how hard I try to feel sad, or maudlin, or regretful, I just can't do it. I see my friends, and I have fond memories of working with them. I see my work, and I feel proud (when I'm not laughing at the Ugly Grey Spacesuit) of a lot of the things I did with what I was given to work with. As a bonus, watching lots of TNG has brought back happy, lucid memories of of all sosrts of things I did when I was a teenager: I get flashes of painting 40K armies in my dressing room, going to Depeche Mode concerts with my friends, watching movies like The Hidden and Alien Nation and Prince of Darkness at the AMC in Burbank with Darin when it was just 10 theatres (and 10 was HUGE back then), and going to different conventions all over the country to celebrate Star Trek. Of course, as I described in Just A Geek, there came a time where I didn't have fun at the cons, and I started to resent them, but even those memories are hard to pull up as I watch these shows from the second and third seasons. Is it selective memory? Of course it is, and I'm totally fine with that.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;AS A TEENAGER, I WAS SO LACKING IN A BIG PICTURE UNDERSTANDING OF WHAT WAS GOING ON AND SO LACKING IN SELF-CONFIDENCE THAT IN LATER YEARS I COULD HARDLY THINK OF THOSE DAYS WITHOUT RUNNING INTO MEMORIES THAT MADE ME CRINGE WITH DISAPPOINTMENT IN MYSELF AND MY PERFORMANCE. SO I AVOIDED THEM EXCEPT IN OCCASIONAL FLASHBACKS OF DISAPPOINTMENT.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;BUT NOW, AS I WRITE THE BIG PICTURE UNDERSTANDING THAT I NEEDED AS A YOUTH; AS I DOCUMENT THE WISDOM OF THE AGES AND WISDOM FROM ALL OF MY RESEARCH, I FIND THAT I DO ENJOY CALLING BACK MANY OF THOSE MEMORIES AND I CAN RELIVE THEM WITHOUT THE DISAPPOINTING THOUGHTS. IS IT SELECTIVE MEMORY OR JUST A BETTER PERSPECTIVE? I THINK THE LATTER. BUT IN ANY CASE I'M TOTALLY FINE WITH IT AND I'M VERY HAPPY WITH THAT!!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I know I went over this in Just A Geek and Dancing Barefoot, but it's worth it for me to go over it one more time: I don't have to avoid or run away from science fiction because I was a big part of a huge science fiction franchise, and I didn't have the acting success I'd hoped for when I quit. I was a science fiction geek long before I was Wesley Crusher, and I'll be a science fiction geek for the rest of my life. I can't run away from fandom, because I can't run away from myself. I can't run away from who I am. Resistance is futile.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I LOVE THE WISDOM AND THE HUMOR IN THE ABOVE.  TO PUT IT IN TERMS OF MY LIFE, I DON'T HAVE TO AVOID OR RUN AWAY FROM THE FACTS ABOUT MY LIFE. I WAS RAISED IN A NEAR IDEALIC TIME (THE 1950s) AND WAY (LEFT TO MAKE MY OWN DECISIONS AND FIND MY OWN WAY) EVEN THOUGH I NEVER UNDERSTOOD IT. I DIDN'T HAVE THE SUCCESS IN BUSINESS AND POLITICAL LEADERSHIP THAT I HAD HOPED FOR WHEN I GRADUATED FROM OKLAHOMA STATE UNIVERSITY.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;BUT I WAS A DREAMER THEN AND I'LL BE A DREAMER FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE. I CAN'T RUN AWAY FROM MY HOPES AND DREAMS BECAUSE I CAN'T RUN AWAY FROM MYSELF. I CAN'T RUN AWAY FROM WHO I AM.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;RESISTANCE IS FUTILE!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;When I read Shane's post earlier this week, I initially responded to what he said about the work. But as I reflected on it, I kept thinking about the Road. When I knew what my Road was, I knew where my Road was, and I knew how to get back on it. I wasn't as far off it as I&lt;br /&gt;thought, in fact. I just had to turn the wheel and step on the gas. It also helped to drive with my eyes open for a change.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;AS I REFLECT ON MY ROAD, MY NEW ROAD OF BEING AN AUTHOR AND A PUBLIC SPEAKER; OF TRYING TO HELP MY FAMILY AND MY COUNTRY, I FIND THAT I NEVER WAS VERY FAR OFF OF THAT ROAD. I WASN'T AS FAR OFF AS I THOUGHT. NOW I KNOW WHAT MY ROAD IS. TIME AND MY INTERESTS AND CIRCUMSTANCES HAVE OPENED UP NEW POSSIBILITIES. THIS TIME I FOUND MY ROAD WITH MY EYES OPENED BY EXPERIENCE AND WITH HONEST AND REALISTIC EXPECTATIONS ABOUT MYSELF!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;My Road is paved with d20s and TRON DVDs and Atari 2600 games. It's lit by the glow of TNG and BSG episodes and the soundtrack is by Vangelis. It's patrolled by Rover and they sell Soylent Green in the rest stop vending machines. The speed limit is 42, but if you flash your Bavarian Illuminati card, you can use the FTL drive to make it to Milliways in time for dinner.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I'm back on my Road, and nobody can take the sky from me.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I'M BACK ON MY ROAD, THIS TIME WITH A COMPASS AND A MAP! Note that it is an inherent power and not a law that is to be interpreted by the Supreme Court to give different meanings of ‘public uses’.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eminent_domain"&gt;http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eminent_domain&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Eminent domain (U.S.), compulsory purchase (United Kingdom, New Zealand, Ireland), resumption/compulsory acquisition (Australia) or expropriation (Canada, South Africa) in common law legal systems is the inherent power of the state to seize a citizen's private property, expropriate private property, or rights in private property, without the owner's consent. The property is taken either for government use or by delegation to third parties who will devote it to "public uses."&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Condemnation via eminent domain indicates the government is taking the property or an interest in it, such as an easement. In most cases the only thing that remains to be decided when a condemnation action is filed is the amount of just compensation, although in some cases the right to take may be challenged by the property owner on the grounds that the attempted taking is not for a public use, or has not been authorized by the legislature, or because the condemnor has not followed the proper procedure required by law.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;“We hold these truths to be (changed by BF to) self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights (note that it is capitalized), that among these are Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness. – That to secure these rights, governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, - that when any form of government becomes destructive of these ends it is the right of the people to alter or abolish it, and to institute new government, laying its foundation and organizing its powers in such form as to them shall seem most likely to effect their safety and happiness. NOOOO!!! It is a new law created and enabled by Judges, including our Supreme Court justices!! First was the exercise to be the little Orphan that you were when you were little and write what you feel. Here is mine:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;"What is my true problem as a little orphan boy? I continue to remember incidents where I did and didn’t do things in a way that I wish I had and it makes me cringe with disappointment in my performance. And I relate a lot of that to the fact that I just didn’t have a good understanding of the overview of things – I didn’t have any real good explanations, if any explanations at all – I didn’t have any support that I knew I could count on to be there for me and with me.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I knew Dad would let the bigger neighbor boy beat the heck out of me just to see if I would get mad enough and hurt enough to fight and hurt him back. I knew he would only stop another neighbor boy from jumping in to help the bigger one – who of course wouldn’t have needed any help.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Dad said he was going to bat for me when we broke into that deserted house and took those war medals but he really wasn’t he was just trying to scare us to teach us a lesson. Mom was too timid to do any standing up for me or any of us.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So it was that I was a little orphan boy who had parents that supported me financially and who I knew loved me but there was a giant missing bit of support and training and explanation and assistance.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;My little orphan wants someone to assure him/her that he/she is loved and supported and that this grownup knows the way and understands what she needs to know and understand and is going to sit right there and hold her hand and help her and make SURE that she is happy and self-confident and knows how to deal with the issues of other kids and that I am not going to let anyone hurt her. She needs explanations – comfort – security of love and support.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And that support and love; that help is needed by a lot of people. A lot of people have the same kind of issues. A lot of people need to know that it is OK that their parents didn’t know and didn’t give them what they needed or did bad things; that their parents were just people who were trying to balance their lives between all the demands and teachings that they had but generally were really clueless themselves.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We all need to understand that it is OK – it is OK that our parents – that my parents - didn’t know. No wonder they didn’t know; they were traumatized themselves!!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;They had all the lack of understanding, the pressures of religion and making a living; the standards of society to deal with, and then the additional pressures of Mother Nature giving them children to take care of.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;They were getting older, and trying to keep a job and plan for the future, and trying to enjoy life while they were at it. They needed an understanding too!!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So here is the understanding – here is the love and explanation and training and the big picture about what life is all about, where you are now and where you are going and what you need to do and understand and know. And here is how to handle defeats and tough times; how to understand where you stand in the world and in every aspect of your self and your performance.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And the giant bonus is that these understandings will help you get that wonderful self-confidence that will make you completely comfortable with who you are, what you have, where you are, where you are going and how to handle yourself. That kind of self-confidence makes you comfortable with yourself and makes you beautiful to others. It attracts people; it creates love and a warm, loving person that attracts other warm and loving people.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Yes that is my story – that is my ache - to be able to provide that to others – and it isn’t limited to my family – I always knew that it wasn’t; that I just wasn’t bold enough to go for my real dream and to hell with how it is received!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If I can do a really good job of making the above case – of making it full of love and humor and touching emotions – some people will relate to it and it will be a very positive thing for them and I will be proud of it. And some of my family, now, or mine and my sisters' posterity, will recognize it and benefit from it. And my purpose in life – the best uses of my Attributes - bringing forth my highest potential in service to my Loved Ones - will be fulfilled!! I will feel the satisfaction and the Happiness that I do right now as the knot in my throat grows and aches and tears well up in my eyes.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And that, my friends, is what it is all about. That is when I know, and that is when you will know, that you are putting your Attributes to their best possible uses for the moment, when the passion you feel tells you you are.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;That is when I can feel that glowing of my face begin to happen again – the tears coming to my eyes – feeling the connection to that light from above – like when I was a little boy in that field.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I had ridden my bike out there to be alone and pray. I knew for sure what my blessings were. I prayed and cried and prayed until I had presented myself openly and honestly, with perfect intentions and had completely cleared my mind. I felt I had a connection to the higher power and that a beam of light began to shine down on me. I had exposed my needs and desires and been grateful for all the blessings I had.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I felt then, 50+ years ago, so strongly that I can remember it vividly even now, that my face was glowing a brilliant white. That it came from a heavenly beam; that the Lord had blessed me. And, my most important dreams have come true!! I have a wonderful family with good possibilities. I love and am loved. I am active and healthy and making a positive contribution.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Here I am a 65 year old man with two kids and two grandkids who have good possibilities for their lives! I am in a position to help all of them with these writings and I am going to give it my all. I have lived my life with good moral values and good intentions and free from pain and suffering. I have suffered through some tough times and situations but came out the other side a strong man – someone I am proud of – someone that convinces me that I always was strong but just didn’t know it and had never been taught.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;When I was young my Mom had what the doctor called a ‘Nervous Breakdown’ which I now completely understand. But at the time I thought it might be a weakness in the family that I had inherited and I lost confidence in myself that I would be able to withstand pressure.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Through the years I have had really tough pressures like most people have. I have not always been on top of everything but I have handled every situation and I have made generally good decisions. I have maintained my dignity in most every situation and made myself really proud in some. I have not embarrassed or defamed my family. I have stood for what seemed right to me.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And now I stand to try to make this world a better place to live so people don’t have to get put in those situations; so that we have well functioning governmental agencies that make life safe and comfortable and provide peace and security so that we can all pursue our own happiness. And now I can contribute my understandings and experiences to help others to make good progress in their pursuit of happiness!! I substituted my Granddaughter for myself since I am positioning myself to help my Loved Ones with the support that I needed.  Olivia is such  a wonderful, bright, happy child that I know she doesn't need this support right now and hopefully she never will.  But this is for anyone who does need it:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;"Hello little Miss Olivia (my Granddaughter). I am so sorry that you are having some confusion here. But trust me, My Little Love (my nickname for her), it is just a little confusion. I did the same thing and felt the same way and a lot of people do. So this is just a normal thing and I am here to help you.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The first thing to understand is that you are just a normal little girl and you are feeling normal things and you have this wonderful loving family here to help you and guide you to grow into a self-confident, comfortable and very Happy person. And you Will!!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And that self-confidence that comes from knowing you come from a really good and strong family that has and shares a lot of love, will make you a beautiful person inside and out. The right kind of self-confidence that you will gain, I promise, will shine from you and people will see it in your demeanor and your posture and your speaking and your attitude and it will make you feel really good and comfortable!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The next thing to understand is that you have been born with certain very unique interests and capabilities and understandings. I call them “Attributes”. And you have a Purpose in Life; to understand your Attributes and to put them to their best possible uses. Everyone and everything has unique attributes.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;When a scientist develops a new material they immediately want to know all about it; is it heavy or light; will it bend?; is it gas or metal or liquid?; so they begin testing it and they learn and note those Attributes.Now if the new material is a metal they aren’t going to be disappointed if it isn’t as strong as steel or as light weight as aluminum, they just want to know what its attributes are. Then they will figure out the best possible use of this new material. And that is exactly what you and your family are going to do with you and your Attributes.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So don’t worry if you are not the best athlete or the prettiest or the smartest person in your class. When you fulfill your mission in life, to put your Attributes to their best possible uses, you will be extremely happy and lucky and you will love life and your family and friends and be loved by all those you care about the most!! It truly is and will be a wonderful life! So this is just the first day in our journey of discovery!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I love you My Little Love! Your Mom and Dad and Grandparents all love you! We are going to have this wonderful life together and we are having it right now! Might be similar to the orphan –&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I wish they understood the reality of the world and people and attributes – and looking internally to uses your attributes to their Highest and Best use.&lt;br /&gt;I wish they wouldn’t be confused by religion stuff like I was; that they understand that they have an obligation to make themselves and others Happy – ‘to have life and have it more abundantly’!!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Third question –What insight and special Attributes do I have to best present this message? What is it in me that what kinds of things that are within me that I could help others with.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The fact that I have experienced these things and studied a lot of really good authors and writings looking for the answers and understandings. The fact that I experienced a strong lack of self-confidence, fears and doubts, yet found that I was strong; much stronger than I thought and that I now understand; much more than I thought I would be able to understand.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The fact that I like to explain things and present good ideas and have good discussions with objective people makes me a good person to be a public speaker - a presenter - an Author.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;What am I capable of doing and seeing that is unusual that I can help people with?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I see that religion has caused a lot of confusion among me and my family [and the world!!] and I know it is a very touchy subject.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I see that there are taboo subjects in our society where we aren't allowed to have objective discussions and evaluations - where we are teaching our children as we were taught that you 'just have faith'; don't look at or talk about the facts; pray and everything will be alright.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I need to help them all to focus on being objective, making decisions for themselves using facts; separate religion from the real you that is living in this modern and wonderful society. Just focus on these things and life will open up for you and you will make yourself happy.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Here is a summary of what I learned from my Orphan story:I feel that I was never able to realize my full potential and be my happiest as a young person partly because my parents were too busy making a living for us.
